CONNIE AWARD SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS - WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Clean Truck Program Administrator
Ana Ericka Martin Jimenez is a program administrator with a deep-seated passion for navigating the complexities of logistic operations. Her many years of experience coupled with her academic background make her an asset to the port community. Her journey is a testament to the transformative power of education.
Ana Ericka’s introduction to transportation and logistics began during her time at MGM/IEAG, a transformer manufacturer, where she honed her skills in logistics coordination and supply chain management as a coordinator for the traffic department. In this role, she efficiently prepared shipping documentation, coordinated with USA and Mexico customs brokers and freight forwarders, managed cargo freight between Mexico and the USA, controlled inventory, obtained necessary permits from government agencies to be in compliance with import/export regulations, and verified preferential treatment under NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) now known as USMCA.
"Those years were crucial in shaping my understanding of logistics operations," said Ana Ericka.
She transitioned to Wedding Favorites, a manufacturer of wedding favors, as a shipping/processing assistant. She developed skills such as shipping cost analysis, implemented KPI indicators to improve the processes, converted the inventory system to Just in time (JIT), an inventory management method, and encouraged more efficient warehouse space usage.
Her career further evolved at Tetra Tech, where she currently contributes to critical projects for the Port of Long Beach and Los Angeles, focusing on initiatives aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability within the port community. One such initiative is the Clean Truck Program, designed to help the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles to reduce truck-related emissions.
"The most exciting part of my day is the chance to problem solve. I facilitate solutions to help transportation companies and owner operators. Each day presents new opportunities to innovate and drive positive change," said Ana Ericka, “The Clean Truck Program not only benefits the ports but also contributes to the well-being of our community."
Ana Ericka's academic path started in Tijuana, Mexico, where she earned her bachelor's degree in International Trade from Tecnológico De Baja California. Fueled by a fascination with global logistics, she enrolled at California State University Long Beach (CSULB) where she completed the Global Logistics Specialist program. She later returned to complete the Marine Terminal Operations Professional Designation (MTOP), a comprehensive training program that covers all aspects of terminal operations. Beyond her initial academic achievements, she pursued an International Business certificate at Santa Ana College and she is currently attending classes at Long Beach City College's to complete The Pathway to Logistics program.
"I love to learn, and I have always been drawn to understanding how things move through the supply chain," said Ana Ericka, “The industry is constantly changing and evolving. I am committed to understanding best practices through continuous education so that I can make meaningful contributions.”
Ana Ericka’s passion for learning and education has opened numerous doors for her, setting her apart from her peers. She acknowledges mentors like Angeli Logan from CSULB for their guidance and career advice.
“It has been great to have the support of professors. Because they are professionals in the industry, they have a lot of knowledge and hands-on experience. They are enthusiastic about what they do, which has contributed to my education and professional development,” said Ana Ericka.
Ana Ericka first encountered CII at CSULB over a decade ago. In 2014, she received a scholarship at the Long Beach Connie Award luncheon, which provided crucial support for her program completion. She was drawn to CII for its career advancement and networking prospects. Ana Ericka intends to attend this September's Connie Award luncheon in Long Beach, marking 10 years since she was honored with the scholarship.
"Receiving that scholarship was a pivotal moment," she said. “I am deeply grateful to CII for providing me with the means to pursue a path in an industry that I love. I am glad to have the chance to show my appreciation and support the event and the other scholarship recipients.”
Looking ahead to the future, Ana Ericka continues to seek ways to expand her knowledge base. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasizes the importance of internships for prospective students.
“My advice to new students in the field is to take advantage of internships. The hands-on training and networking opportunities are very valuable in understanding the industry and can open doors to new experiences in the years to come,” said Ana Ericka.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Ana Ericka finds fulfillment in supporting her children's educational aspirations. Her eldest son is following in her footsteps at Santa Ana College, pursuing an international business degree while her daughters pursue diverse career paths in interior design and American Sign Language Linguistics and Deaf Culture (ASLD) at CSULB.
