About Us

Welcome to CII. Since 1960, the mission of the Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) is to promote and support the business of international trade and the intermodal container transportation community. We focus on industry awareness, preserving the history of intermodalism, and engaging scholarly interest in the field by organizing educational conferences and seminars, serving as an information resource, providing networking opportunities, offering career guidance, arranging internships and facilitating scholarships.



Brendan McCahill Sr.


Brendan is the Senior Vice President of the Trade Data Content Division of Datamyne, a provider of international trade data.  He has more than 25 years in maritime and international trade. His prior experience includes senior management positions with Hanjin Shipping, Norton Lilly International, Gulf and Atlantic Maritime Services and Associated Container Transportation.

Allen Clifford


Vice Chairman
Allen is Executive Vice President, Commercial, of Mediterranean Shipping Company (USA) Inc. He joined Containership Agency in 1981, the agency that first represented MSC in the United States. He was instrumental in building the company’s U.S. client base and initial business practices, along with Nicola Arena, as the company evolved to become MSC (USA) Inc. in 1990. He was CII President for five years.

Michael DiVirgilio


Mike is the Principal of MJDiVirgilio & Associates. Prior to launching his consulting business, Mike spent 40 years working in the industry. He began his maritime career in New York City with Moore-McCormack Lines. Before going to Ceres, he was a 30-plus year veteran of NYK Line (NA).

Steven Blust


Vice President
Steve is President of International Institute of Container Lessors and is former Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission. Steve has been involved with CII for more than 15 years in various executive roles. He has been instrumental in the success of CII’s scholarship program as the organization’s recent Education Committee chair.

Sue Coffey


Susan Coffey is the Director of Business Development at Northwest Seaport Alliance. Susan Coffey has been involved in the transportation industry for over 25 years. On the maritime side with Nedlloyd and Sealand working in various marketing , trade and sales management positions.  In addition to maritime experience Susan spent 7 years at CSX Intermodal. She had the opportunity to live in Ireland for 3 years working for Eagle Global Logistics –  a third party logistics firm.   

Barbara S. Yeninas


Executive Director
Barbara leads BSY Associates Inc., a leading business-to-business branding and marketing communications consulting firm. She has been active in promoting the container industry for more than four decades and continues to play a key role in many industry educational outreach programs. She has been executive director since 1985.
